Montréal, October 22, 2015 – Located in Saint-Laurent borough, the Société de transport de Montréal’s Stinson bus garage (CT) was given LEED Gold level certification from the Canada Green Building Council’s, a first in Québec for this type of building.

LEED, the STM’s chosen path

« We decided this project would set an example as a sustainable initiative, one that opens the way for our future endeavours, said Philippe Schnobb, chairman of the STM board of directors. And experience has shown us that running a project according to principles of sustainability is financially sound! For example, the heat recovery system, that cost us $4.1 M to buy, produces recurrent energy savings of some $925,000 annually. »

« We welcome the STM’s initiative, as it is fully consistent with Ville de Montréal’s objectives in terms of sustainable development. This green building is a reflection of our Administration’s vision and commitment to promoting responsible development for the future of our great city and future generations, » added Aref Salem, Montréal executive committee member responsible for transportation.

Opened in 2014, the Stinson bus garage features a number of green, innovative characteristics for a bus garage:

Energy efficiency

  • Heat recovery system with an 80% efficiency rating
  •  21 rooftop skylights reduce the need for artificial lighting
  • Buses circulate indoors, minimizing the opening and closing of garage doors for arriving and departing buses, reducing energy losses and pollution levels, while efficiently moving buses inside for maintenance and servicing
  • Compared to other STM bus garages, Stinson consumes 60% less energy

Less thermal islands

  • Green roof extending over 8,000 m2 (equal to one and a half football fields); the remaining roof surface is covered with a light-reflecting material
  • Greening of the site by adding over 500 trees, 1300 shrubs and plants, along with 22,000 m2 of lawn and wooded areas

Resource consumption

  • Rainwater catchment systems and water recovery systems that recycle bus washing and rinsing water have lowered consumption of drinking water by 75% %
  • Using sustainable materials like wood and steel, from regional sources, promote the local economy, while limiting GHG emissions related to their transportation

Integrated mobility

  • Parking spaces for car-sharing vehicles
  • Recharging stations for electric cars
  • Indoor parking space for 70 bicycles

A unique building

Covering a 38,400 m2 area, the Stinson garage is dedicated to housing, maintaining and servicing 300 buses (200 standard and 100 articulated), and provides a workplace for some 700 employees. The Stinson garage handles 32 bus lines and is only the second STM garage to house articulated buses.

Still, this is the STM’s very first garage to take bus circulation exclusively indoors for all daily maintenance and servicing operations. This lessens most of the impact on the neighbourhood, while increasing operational efficiency by moving buses around more quickly.

The STM received the financial support of the ministère des Transports du Québec (MTQ) for this major project, which cost $154.8 M to complete.

An award-winning project

Designed by the Lemay firm of architects, the Stinson bus garage has already garnered several awards and honours, including:

  • Prix Novae de l’entreprise citoyenne – in the sustainable building category
  • Grands prix du Génie-conseil québécois – in the « Bâtiment – Mécanique et Électrique » category
  • Canadian Institute of Steel Construction – in the « Green Buildings », « Industrial Projects» and « Young Architects » categories
  • Prix International Design Awards – in the « Design » category
