On may 12 – the Montréal Impact and STM join forces

Press release

Montréal, May 10, 2012  –  At the heart of major events in Montréal, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) is proud to embark on a new partnership with the Montréal Impact. This year, an even greater number of supporters will gather at the Olympic or Saputo stadium to cheer the team on. For those who are coming from the west, the east, the north or the south, the fields are located nearby Pie-IX or Viau métro stations. Public transit is the best way to enjoy the game without the headaches of dealing with traffic and parking.

The kick-off of a great partnership

The next Impact home game against the LA Galaxy team featuring David Beckham will be held on Saturday, May 12, at 4 p.m., and be hosted by the STM. Many activities and entertainment events are planned which include a giant babyfoot game table featured from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Pie-IX métro station, a half-time contest, squads patrolling parking lots to raise awareness for public transit among motorists, as well as drawings for public transit passes. At the end of April, 65 tickets to attend the May 12 game were drawn among customers on the STM Facebook Society in Motion page.

An eco-friendly gesture to encourage the Impact

To get to and from highly attended events in public transit rather than by car is an initiative that generates a strong ecological impact. Indeed, this simple action produces the same benefit as a tree would during a year. Imagine the impact when thousands of fans use public transit! In 2011, public transit passenger rides in Montréal did as much good for the planet as over 200 million trees in a year, representing about 2 000 times the size of Mount Royal’s forest.

In this regard, it is fitting to mention that the STM has recently received an award recognizing its commitment to sustainable development for the third consecutive year at the London MetroRail conference attended by some forty public transit agencies from all over the world. This year, the award for the Best Green Initiative was given in recognition for the sum of its eco-friendly actions. The STM has also received the Mercure prize awarded by the Federation of Québec Chambers of Commerce in the Sustainable development – Public administration category.
