Tour de l’île the STM, proud partner with Vélo Québec
Montréal, April 28, 2009 – The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) is proud to announce its partnership with Vélo Québec, formed as part of the Montréal Bike Fest, particularly in light of the Tour de l’Île being held Sunday, June 7. For both parties, it also means promoting greater public transit use by the local population and the positive impact that would have on the environment.
Active means of transportation “The concept of the transportation cocktail is based on meshing and merging interests between large public transit organizations (métro, bus, commuter trains, railways, etc.) and private or personal means of transportation, such as bicycles, taxis, car rentals, car-sharing cooperatives and car-pools,“ indicated Mr. Labrecque.
Of course, the STM wants to expand public transit, but it also believes it must do more and encourage the use of active means of transportation. Indeed, this approach could lead a higher percentage of motorists to leaving their car behind on occasion. “Making modes of transportation more easily accessible, as they are already an alternative to exclusive, single-occupant car use, and ensuring that active means of transportation become the obvious choice: these are the goals that the STM has set for itself, by becoming partners with groups like Vélo Québec that promote other ways of getting around,“ declared the Chairman of the STM Board of Directors, Michel Labrecque, also an ardent supporter of the transportation cocktail concept.
Bicycles + métro + bus As in past years, the STM will open the doors to the métro to everyone taking part in the Tour la nuit and Tour de l’Île events, making it possible for them to carry their bicycles in the métro, under certain conditions. More details will be given to participants by means of the event kit they will receive from Vélo Québec. The information will also be available on the STM website a few days prior to the Bike Fest. In closing, some 150 people representing the STM will take part in the Tour de l’Île de Montréal next Sunday, June 7.
In the wake of this partnership and as a means of reaching its goals, the STM will be on hand where activities are held under the Vélo + Métro + Bus big top. For the occasion, it will provide visitors with a small taste of the various transit fares being offered, giving them the chance to win single transit fares, as well as weekly, monthly and annual subscriptions.
