The STM publishes its first report on sustainable development

Montréal, June 2, 200
9 The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) is publishing its first Sustainable Development Report for 2008. This report, along with the 2008 Activity Report are now both available from the corporate website at www.stm.info.

The Sustainable Development Report allows readers to fully appreciate the efforts by STM to integrate principles of sustainable development at all levels. It also presents the company’s action plan centered around three major themes : sustainable mobility, sustainable management and the promotion of sustainable development. Each theme features a number of corporate policies and targets, thereby making it possible to measure the STM’s environmental, social and economic contribution.

“We are particularly pleased with the results obtained in terms of increased ridership, as it lead to preventing more greenhouse gas emissions and improving the quality of living environment offered on the island of Montréal.,” declared Michel Labrecque, chairman of the STM board of directors. “With an exceptional 4.1% growth in ridership, bringing the total number of rides to 382.5 million in 2008, we have established a new, modern-day record as, historically, we had not reached such levels since 1949!”

In turn, the Activity Report focuses on the achievement of a number of large-scale projects that enable the STM to improve customer service, in addition to maintaining and replacing equipment. It also presents performance indicators, statistics and appendices providing a wide range of complementary information.

“More than ever, this first Sustainable Development Report truly shows the STM’s concern with responding to the needs and fulfilling the expectations of its clients, making it one of the best public transit corporations in North America. By gathering and uniting the very best elements in the community, we will succeed in positioning Montréal among the best cities in the world in terms of performance in urban mobility. More than ever, public transportation needs public support and effort, as well as dedicated, indexed and recurrent sources of financing,” concluded Mr. Labrecque
