Sauvé/Côte-Vertu BRT soon in construction mode

The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) awarded the contract for the implementation of bus priority measures along the Sauvé/Côte-Vertu corridor at its Board of Directors meeting on December 5. The work will begin in spring 2019 and end in fall 2020 at a cost of approximately $17 million.

“The STM’s goal is to increase the quality of public transportation services to improve the customer experience. One way we can achieve this is to implement bus priority measures on corridors with high ridership. These measures include reserved lanes for buses, which allow us to improve the service delivered to customers by optimizing trip times and maintaining bus service punctuality, thereby increasing the competitiveness of public transportation over single-occupant car use,” says Philippe Schnobb, Chairman of the STM Board of Directors.

The project includes:

  • Installation of a curbside reserved lane with a distinctive colour in the Sauvé/Côte-Vertu corridor (including paving, road markings and signage)
  • Geometric reconfiguration of lanes on certain sections
  • Widening of sidewalks in the Acadie and Muir sectors
  • Installation of priority traffic lights
  • Paving of certain road sections
  • Upgrading of lighting

The work will be carried out in partnership with the City of Montréal, which will cover a portion of the work’s costs. This partnership will allow for an integrated project that will limit future work on the corridor. A memorandum of understanding was agreed between the City and the STM to enable this project to be carried out.

The future BRT will span 4.7 kilometres between the Sauvé and Côte-Vertu métro stations and reduce travel times between 10% to 20% compared to current trip times. The bus priority measures will be reserved for buses only and will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Approximately 40,000 public transportation customers use this major corridor each day on the 121 Sauvé/Côte-Vertu line.
