The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) is beginning work on the construction of the second accessible entrance to the Vendôme métro station.

By the end of the year, preparatory work will be completed, such as the removal of Marcelle Ferron’s artwork for restoration, demolition of the natural ventilation shaft, and changing the route of the bus loop near the existing entrance.

Extending to winter 2020, the other work will particularly include the construction of:

  • Entrances on the platforms of the Réseau de transport métropolitain (RTM) train station;
  • A pedestrian tunnel to the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC);
  • The accessible new entrance, including five elevators and leading to the STM métro system and the RTM train platform.

At all times, the bus, métro and commuter train services will be maintained and the existing tunnel leading to the MUHC will also remain accessible.

A busy intermodal hub

The construction of this second entrance is made necessary by the ridership forecasts, which show that the number of customers at this intermodal hub will grow from 9 million to 18 million per year by 2021. To deal with this reality, the addition of a second entrance equipped with elevators turned out to be the best solution to ensure the adequate flow of passengers.

Carried out at a cost of $76.5 million, this project is fully funded by the Ministère des Transports, de l’Électrification des transports et de la Mobilité durable.
