Indeed, buses will be able to travel in both directions on designated sections between Cavendish Boulevard in Saint-Laurent and Saint-Charles Boulevard in Kirkland.
STM’s 72, 220, 470 and 475 bus lines can therefore take advantage of the highway shoulder during periods of heavy traffic.
BUS LINES | SECTIONS OF HIGHWAY 40 | |
72 | Alfred-Nobel | Between Cavendish and Côte-Vertu interchange (westbound only) |
220 | Kieran | Between Cavendish and Henri-Bourassa |
470 | Express Pierrefonds | Between Côte-Vertu interchange and Saint-Jean |
475 | Express Dollard-des-Ormeaux | Between Côte-Vertu and Sources (westbound only) Between Sources and Cavendish (eastbound only) |
Unlike reserved lanes open during specific periods, usually during rush hour, these sections of highway shoulder can be used by buses when the speed of highway traffic is below 50 km/h. Unauthorized buses, taxis and car-poolers cannot travel on the highway shoulder.

The advantages of Bus preferential measures
Bus preferential measures offer several advantages. They make it possible for STM to provide faster, more regular and on-time service, while passengers save time. They also have a significant environmental impact with lower greenhouse gas emissions and can be deployed at little cost.
