The Metro's
40th Anniversary
Bravo and Happy Birthday!
Montreal,
14 October 2006 - Forty years ago today, the then Mayor of
Montreal, Mr. Jean Drapeau, officially inaugurated the Metro. That
celebration has become part of history and is still alive in the memories of
those who were present.
The Société de
transport de Montréal (STM) hopes that this time too the 40th anniversary
celebrations will leave behind it wonderful memories that everyone will
enjoy recalling. To this end, the STM has planned out on behalf of its
clients and of the public at large a range of activities that, like the
lunchtime concerts, are guaranteed crowd-pleasers.
Mr. Claude
Trudel, the Chairman of the STM Board, is pleased to announce that "Exceptionally,
to mark this day, as was the case on inauguration day, October 14, 1966, the
integrated Metro/Bus transit network is carrying all passengers free, as of
5 a.m. this morning to 1:30 a.m. on Sunday."
Since
Thursday, customers have been able to take part in the "Metro 40 Years"
contest, in which 40 passengers will win a year's subscription to the CAM
metro/bus monthly pass.
Another
innovation is the commemorative booklet, designed specifically to underline
the 40-year history of the Metro, which will be distributed as inserts in
today's major Montreal dailies.
"We hope that
this will be read by many of you and that you will keep it as a reminder of
your participation in this celebration. The STM wishes a happy anniversary
to the whole population!" concluded its Director General, Mr. Yves Devin.
