Press releases
The Société de transport de Montréal informs
transit users of its efforts to ensure optimal bus service
Montreal,
September 12, 2006 -
In
the wake of a press release by the bus drivers’ union, the Syndicat des
chauffeurs d’autobus, oprateurs de métro et employs des services connexes,
STM leaders wish to clarify the situation regarding bus services. Indeed,
the STM makes every possible effort to ensure optimal bus service, more
specifically during the one-hour morning and afternoon peak periods.
More than 99% of bus
services are currently provided, although the STM acknowledges that service
is somewhat slower during morning and afternoon rush hour, a consequence of
the unavailability of buses during these periods. This represents cutbacks
of only some 100 hours of service each day out of a total of almost 14,000
hours of service on weekdays.
The
situation is explained in part by the unreliabililty of first-generation
low-floor buses that require more maintenance than others. « Talks are
currently underway with Transport Québec, the Québec Municipal Affairs
department, Volvo International and Novabus to allow the STM to dispose of
the 456 vehicles in that category as quickly as possible », explained STM
Director General, Yves Devin. The STM’s fleet of buses consists of some 1600
vehicles.
« In addition to apologizing to
transit users for any inconvenience this situation may cause them, the STM
wants to make it clear that bus drivers are not at all responsible for any
of the delays with service. Obviously, we are doing everything possible in
cooperation with our maintenance workers to correct the situation as soon as
possible. We are very grateful for the work done by our bus drivers day in
and day out. Our most recent surveys show a high level of satisfaction among
transit users, particularly with respect to the courteous service provided
by drivers », added Mr. Devin.
As a public transit corporation,
the STM is a key component to economic growth in the Montréal area and
contributes to the quality of life of citizens and to the protection of the
environment. The STM develops and operates an integrated bus and metro
network, courteously providing customers with safe, comfortable and reliable
transportation. Its employees, transit users, corporate and commercial
partners all take pride in this relationship, because the STM is known for
delivering quality services at a fair price.
