Tailored transit services in Pointe-aux-Trembles
The STM will provide an extra 10,000 hours
of service beginning January 2006!
Montreal,
22 September 2005 - The STM will be adding 10,000 hours of bus
service in Pointe-aux-Trembles in 2006. According to Claude Dauphin,
chairman of the STM board of directors, “Redesigning public transit services
in the eastern tip of Montréal reflects the commitment made by the STM
following consultations at the local level. In addition to attracting about
400 new clients, the various improvements coming into effect next January 9
will make commuting simpler for some 4,400 current transit users and cut
their travel time significantly, both during rush hour and during off peak
periods.”
Real
improvements
More accurately, this review of public transit services in
Pointe-aux-Trembles consisted of adding a bus line, modifying the routes of
four other lines and changing the names of three of them. Thus, the new
86 – Pointe-aux-Trembles was created in response to local transportation
needs and to enable north-south travel in the area. The 186’s modified route
will take it along Sherbrooke between Honoré-Beaugrand station and the
eastern tip of Pointe-aux-Trembles. The 187’s new route will link the
residential area and the métro station, while the 189 will follow the length
of Notre-Dame from Georges-V all the way to the métro. Finally, the Métrobus
184 – Bout-de-l’Île will follow De Montigny between Tricentenaire and
Saint-Jean-Baptiste to improve service for residents. Mirroring these
changes, three bus routes will also be changing names. Thus, the 186 –
René-Lévesque will become the 186 – Sherbrooke Est; the 187 –
Notre-Dame will become the 187 – René-Lévesque and, lastly, the 189
–Pointe-aux-Trembles will become the 189 – Notre-Dame.
Listening
to local needs
“Speaking to my colleagues of the Table des élus-es de l’Extrême-Est
de Montréal, I made a commitment about holding public consultations among
residents of Pointe-aux-Trembles and Montréal-Est. I followed up on my
commitment and kept my promise ! I am pleased to join Borough Mayor Cosmo
Maciocia and the STM team in unveiling the results of that public
consultation and the upcoming changes for January 2006 that will make it
easier to commute and encourage the use of public transit among
neighbourhood residents,” added Nicole Léger, MNA for the
Pointe-aux-Trembles area.
A
growing sector
Mr. Maciocia indicated that, considering its soaring growth,
Pointe-aux-Trembles had been identified as a priority among neighbourhoods
during the Montréal Summit. « People are increasingly choosing this area to
live in or to do business. We must provide services and make it more
accessible. Public transit plays a crucial role and I am convinced that the
work done at the local level since 2002 with various advocacy groups will
produce the results we want and lead to increased use of public transit
services in our sector.”
The
modifications to transit services in Pointe-aux-Trembles planned for January
2006 are the last phase of a review process aimed at simplifying local
transportation, making it easier to reach Honoré-Beaugrand métro station and
improving rapid transit to downtown. Indeed, the 182, 184, 410 and 430 bus
routes have already been reviewed during previous phases.
