In the event of a strike by maintenance employees
the STM will comply with the decision of the Essential Services Council

Montreal, November 16, 2003 –  In the matter of the negotiations between the STM and the maintenance employees, the conciliator, Mme Suzanne Therrien, brought the two parties together this afternoon to try and reach an agreement before the employees exercise their right to strike at 11: 00 p.m. tonight. In the event of a strike, the Société de transport de Montréal will comply with the decision of the Essential Services Council and provide services during rush hour and at night only. Thus, the buses and métro will be available form 5: 30 a.m. to 9: 00 a.m., from 3: 00 p.m. to 6: 30 p.m. and again from 11: 00 p.m. to 1: 00 a.m. Due to these allocation periods, the usual school transport will not be available. In addition, there will be no weekend service. However, Paratransit service will be maintained in its entirety.

To plan their travel more effectively, customers can call STM-INFO (786-4636) or AUTOBUS (288-6287) to obtain the schedules for the buses. They can also consult the Internet site : www.stm.info where all trip information will be updated as events unfold.

Finally, rest assured that the STM wishes to come to an agreement with the maintenance employees as it has done with the Syndicat des chauffeurs, opérateurs et employés des services connexes-SCFP (3 600 employees) and the Syndicat du personnel administratif, technique et professionnel du transport en commun-SCFP (600 employees). These four-year agreements call for wage increases of 8.7% and respect the City of Montreal's negotiation parameters.
