The STM’s Board of Directors approve the name change
from Longueuil to Longueuil-Université-de-Sherbrooke
for South Shore metro station

Montreal, 14 November 2002 – Members of the Société de transport de Montréal’s Board of Directors have agreed to add the name "Université de Sherbrooke" to the Longueuil metro station’s designation, thus acknowledging the school’s 15-year presence next to the station, with a campus attended by over 7000 students. With this decision, the university joins the ranks of other institutions linked to the metro, namely Université de Montréal, UQAM, McGill and Concordia.

The new "Longueuil-Université de Sherbrooke" name will gradually appear within the metro and the STM’s various documents over the next weeks. The change will also be introduced in all information tools, but only as each one is updated and reprinted, allowing for substancial savings.

According to Claude Dauphin, Chairman of the STM Board, "our decision reflects the wishes of the community. It stems from a request made by Université de Sherbrooke, which received the full support of Longueuil Council members last June".

Longueuil metro station first opened on March 31, 1967, for Expo 67, and sees over 7 million passengers each year. It is the network’s 4^th busiest station, with only Berri-UQAM, McGill and Henri-Bourassa stations registering higher ridership levels.
