A smart way of paying for your OPUS Smart card

Our automated fare vending machines in our 68 métro stations are now accepting smart cards (debit or credit).

Customers can now use debit or credit smart cards to reload their OPUS cards or to buy transit passes from one of the 167 automated vending machines and recharging terminals.

The STM is adopting smart card technology for its fare vending machines and terminals in order to raise the security level of these transactions. Indeed, banking cards with a built-in chip are virtually impossible to replicate.

Do not remove your smart card from the terminal

The next time you purchase a transit fare, insert your electronic debit or credit card into the card reader and enter your personal identification number (PIN). Your card must remain inserted in the card reader until the transaction is completed.

1 Insert your smart card into the terminal instead of swiping it..

2 Enter you PIN.

3 DO NOT REMOVE YOUR SMART CARD. Leave it in the card reader until transaction is completed.

Magnetic stripe cards can still be used for those who do not have debit or credit cards with chip technology.

Audio instructions for customers with limited eyesight

Our automated fare vending machines are now adapted to the needs of customers with limited eyesight, thanks to the addition of a new audio feature. By plugging the headset into the terminal, customers can now listen to instructions that will assist them to complete their transactions.

Furthermore, these audio messages are available in French or English.
