AIR PURIFICATION The STM has implemented ways of measuring and controlling the exhaust emissions of its buses and service vehicles. Indeed, the STM uses superior quality fuels that reduce the quantity of harmful particles released into the atmosphere. WATER PURIFICATION The STM uses spill-proof nozzles, a fuel-tank filling system that prevents accidental fuel spillage which, in turn, is the main source of contamination of industrial waste water. The system also automatically detects fuel-tank leaks during daily refuelling operations and ensures tanks are filled up to 95% of their capacity. Since 2003, more than 65 transformers that had reached the end of their service life have been replaced by new, dry-type transformers that contain no liquids that could potentially contaminate the environment. ENERGY-SAVING PROGRAMME One of the components of this programme consists of converting part of the heating currently produced from natural gas into electricity. Since its introduction, the programme has led to a reduction in GHG emissions of about five tonnes a year. Other components of the energy-saving programme were also implemented at the STM, such as optimizing the ventilation systems in garages by bleeding fresh air from the heating systems, operating metro station escalators in standby mode, and installing less energy-consuming lighting systems. |
